Not a fox!

The dhole is a sociable wild canine from southern Asia. It forms small packs of closely bonded individuals, but larger, temporary packs of over 40 have been known. Dhole packs form a formidable and cohesive unit that even tigers and leopards avoid confrontations with. Despite this fact, dholes do not attack humans and are very shy. Some human hunters will actually steal dhole kills – following the packs and easily scaring away the dogs from their prey.

The dhole has a wide range of unique vocalizations, communicating with whistles, chirps and chattering you might expect to hear coming from a bird and not a dog. Dholes are adaptable to a wide range of habitats and differing populations range from a light yellow to deep red, short and light or long and heavy coats.

Habitat destruction and poaching of its prey have put heavy pressure on dhole populations, which are on a steady decline. Indiscriminate hunting, such as snare setting, and local prejudice have also contributed to the dhole’s struggle to survive.
